The real riddle going forward is the millennial generation and the rising tide of electric cars. By 2030, millennials will be between 36 and 50, typically when most classic car hobbyists start to get involved. They are the largest generation to date, but questions continue to linger about how they’ll use their buying power. Cars (and trucks) of the 1970s-’90s will increase in popularity – and value – at auction. While we’re still years away from a six-figure Cosworth Vega, GMC Jimmy, or Maverick Grabber at auction, the days of finding cheap and clean examples for pennies on the dollar are over. The average value of the top 15 cars is now closing in on $300,000. Muscle car values took off especially fast after a 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda was sold by Mecum Auctions for $3.5 million last June. No one expected the DeLorean to find a resurgence—all it took was an homage in Back to the Future to drum up interest.
