Bitcoin futures are a relatively recent development following regulatory approval at the end of 2018. They allow trading against the future value of Bitcoin but without using exchanges. The introduction of bitcoin futures has provided some interesting developments over the course of this year. The new product allows U.S. residents to trade futures contracts in exchange for real bitcoin (the “physical” commodity) so long as they have a government-issued ID. According to Paul Chou, CEO of LedgerX, traders are not required to bet on products with U.S. dollars and can buy contracts using only bitcoin. But there are still some interesting options both on the horizon and on the market in the physical bitcoin space. Physical bitcoins are a real killer app for many reasons, first and foremost because they can be exchanged privately and anonymously without leaving any trace whatsoever, just like cash.
